Senator Kagan’s Summer Scrapbook (So Far) June 15, 2016

June 15, 2016

People often ask me, “What do you do when the Senate is out of session?” I thought I would take a moment to show you some of the things that have kept me busy in Rockville and Gaithersburg.

Reading to students at Summit Hall Elementary School.

I like talking to kids about government and civics.

Thanks to the generosity of all who gave, I raised over $2,000 for Multiple Sclerosis research!

Former District 17 Senator, Frank Shore, at Walk MS.

My Senatorial Scholarship Committee conducted interviews with applicants from District 17. We were all impressed with their drive and commitment to their education  as well as giving back to our community!

I moderated a dynamic conversation on “Trailblazing Women” with authors Marlene Trestman of Fair Labor Lawyer, and John Norris of Mary McGrory, at the Gaithersburg Book Festival.  The authors and I are featured here with Mayor Jud Ashman. See the full video from C-SPAN. [Photo by Clark Day.]

Very honored to receive Montgomery County Student Government Association’s
“Legislator of the Year” award.

Continuing my Folk ‘N Great Music House Concert series in Rockville. For 14 years, I have hosted national touring acoustic singer/songwriters here.
The Governor signed my “Language Access” bill that requires all State department and agency websites to be multilingual.
Unveiling the statue of former Gaithersburg Mayor Ed Bohrer with former Mayor and current Councilmember Sidney Katz.

So pleased that my colleague, Sen. Jamie Raskin won the Democratic nomination and will succeed Chris Van Hollen in Congress.

Moderating a panel on nonprofit fundraising for the Nonprofit Village’s Master Series.

I met actor Sam Waterston when I launched my first campaign in 1994. Delighted to see him again and thank him for his warm encouragement as he keynoted the
Jewish Council for the Aging’s gala.

Cheered on the 2nd &3rd graders from Stedwick Elementary School as they performed an original opera at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.

Earned a  Marine cap after taking their challenge at “Celebrate Gaithersburg Day.”

As a longtime admirer and supporter of Hillary Clinton’s, I’m thrilled that she will be the Democratic nominee!

Thank you for taking the time to check out the various places I’ve been since the Senate adjourned.  I hope to cross paths with you in the community soon!
