‘Tis the Special Session Season!

December 5, 2021

Dear Friend:

It is hard to believe that December is already here! As my staff and I continue to prepare my legislation for 2022, the General Assembly will convene in Annapolis tomorrow for a “Special Session.” Read on to learn more about what’s on our agenda.

Wishing a happy 8th & final night of Chanukah to those who celebrate!
Convening a Special Session
Every 10 years, states redraw congressional and state legislative district lines. My colleagues and I will meet in Special Session to debate and vote on proposed Congressional districts based on the 2020 Census results. Maryland Matters published a great sneak peek article if you’re interested in learning more!
Choosing a New State Treasurer
My colleagues and I will be electing a new State Treasurer to take the place of my friend and distinguished leader Nancy Kopp— who recently announced her retirement. To learn more about Nancy’s long and impressive career, please watch my “chat” with her on “Kibbitzing with Kagan“.
Overriding Hogan’s Vetoes
The legislature will also vote whether to override some of Gov. Hogan’s vetoes from the 2021 Session. Topics include providing local tax relief for working families; establishing a marketing plan for Maryland’s Purple Line; allocating more funds for Metropolitan Transportation Authority upgrades; and much more.
While we’re in session, legislators can not accept donations. I hope you’re planning to attend my January 5th “Sen. Kagan Milkshake” event at Chick & Ruth’s Delly in Annapolis. BUT… starting tomorrow morning, the “Contribute” button on my website will be removed until we adjourn.

Keep an eye out for another email in the near future that will preview my 2022 legislative agenda. Among other bills, I am sponsoring six NG911, five election reform, four environmental,… (and a partridge in a pear tree!).

Best,

PS: Did you know that Americans create 25% more trash between the Thanksgiving and New Year’s holidays? In addition to reusing and recycling, please consider the packaging in the gifts you’re buying. Shopping locally means local jobs AND an environmental savings from the lack of voluminous packaging used to ship from online sellers.
PPS: This Tuesday at 8pm, I’ll be the guest host for “Music My Mother Would Not Like.” I’ll be presenting 4 alums of my Folk ‘N Great Music concert series and my UnNaugural Concerts: Emma’s RevolutionCrys MatthewsHeather Mae, and Cynthia Kaplan. There’s no cost to “attend,” but the artists get paid through an online tip jar. Register & join us??
