This week was action-packed (and if you know me, that’s not likely a surprise!). A whopping SEVEN of my bills were heard in Senate committees– FIVE of them in one day! Read on to catch up on the latest happenings.

Connecting with Constituents

In collaboration with Dels. Barve, Gilchrist, and Palakovich Carr, I hosted a Virtual Town Hall with residents of Gaithersburg and Rockville. Each of us spoke about our legislative priorities and then fielded thoughtful questions from those in the Zoom room. Before things get too busy in Annapolis, it was a great opportunity for us to hear from our community.

Honoring Public Safety Heroes

As you (hopefully!) know, I’ve spent the last four years chairing the statewide Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG911) Commission. Our work– and the legislation I’ve sponsored– has put Maryland at the forefront nationally. Last week, I presented Senate Resolutions honoring Anthony Myers, Chair of the 9-1-1 Board for 20+ years, and Steve Souder, my Commission Vice Chair and a 50+ year leader in public safety. I have witnessed firsthand their leadership, commitment, and care for the community and am grateful for the opportunity to partner with (and learn from!) them.

Maryland is grieving the tragic deaths of three firefighters in a Baltimore City fire.

These First Responders and their families deserve the utmost respect

for their courageous service and sacrifice.

No Marylander Disenfranchised

My four election bills were heard in my committee this week. These emergency measures will improve the smooth operations for voters and local elections boards right away. The legislation would:

Establish guidelines for election recounts;
Prohibit fake ballot drop boxes;
Correct a missing ballot signature & report results at the precinct level; and
Increase accountability & transparency related to election expenditures.

Presenting: A Hodgepodge of Bills!

Other topics of my bill hearings this week ranged widely. From banning cat declawing (“deknuckling”) to providing disclosure for car renters to securing additional funding for my Nonprofit Interest-Free Micro Bridge Loan (NIMBL), my brain was certainly “shifting gears” frequently! I am grateful for the animal, consumer, and nonprofit allies supporting these legislative initiatives.
