Final Countdown!

Dear Friend:
As the clock ticks down on the 90-day legislative session, there is much work to be done. We will return to the Senate Floor today (Saturday) for multiple voting sessions, including overrides of Governor Hogan’s vetoes. Among these are the “Time to Care” to provide family and medical leave as well as expanding access to women’s reproductive choice.
On Monday, we will adjourn at midnight “Sine Die.” If bills do not make it out of both chambers before the clock strikes 12, they will have to be introduced again next year!
Addressing the Mental Health Crisis
Enhancing mental health regulations continues to be a priority this session, especially during National Counseling Awareness Month. My colleagues and I recognize that we are facing a serious mental health crisis, and to help address the needs of Marylanders, we passed:
  • SB2: Allowing digital signatures on petitions for mental health emergency evaluations;
  • SB12: Strengthening the existing Behavioral Health Crisis Response Grant Program;
  • SB241: Creating the 9-8-8 Trust Fund; and
  • SB460: Establishing the Consumer Health Access Protection program.

Next week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week! I have worked closely with 9-1-1 experts over the past four years to ensure that Maryland is at the forefront nationally with regard to NextGen 9-1-1. The courageous women and men under the headsets deserve our respect and support for working to save lives every day!
