Honoring National Heroes

On January 6, 2021, courageous police officers put their lives on the line to defend the U.S. Capitol– and our democracy– against the violent mob hoping to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election. Today, I brought Officer Harry Dunn, Officer Michael Fanone, Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, and Officer Daniel Hodges to the Senate Floor, where they were honored with due respect and appreciation for their sacrifices.

Since Trump’s second term began, these heroes and their colleagues have faced renewed threats and attacks– frightening reminders of the ongoing danger posed to those who try to hold the line against extremism. We continue to recognize their sacrifices as we stand together for accountability, justice, and the values we hold dear.

Switching Sides! (Crossing Over?)

I often say, “Every day a bill doesn’t make progress is a day it’s closer to death.” Monday is “Crossover Day.” Bills passed by the Senate head to the House and vice versa. If a bill has not been approved by its chamber of origin by then, there are additional hurdles that make it tougher to pass. With just 26 days left in the legislative session, I am committed to helping get key bills across the finish line.

In addition to the normal frenzy surrounding crossover, we’re facing the looming threat of a federal government shutdown. The reckless policies of the “Trump/Musk” Administration have already wreaked havoc; as Senate President Ferguson recently pointed out, Maryland is the state most affected by federal budget cuts and the firing of federal workers. While we’re working to pass laws that move us forward, they’re dismantling the country and significantly adding to our budget challenges.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

This week, I’d like to highlight Rikki Spector– Maryland’s longest-serving locally elected official and a Baltimore legend. During her 40 years on the City Council, she championed community growth, held key leadership roles, and bridged the gap between constituents and government. “Sell-a-brating” Our Commerce Secretary!

Just a month into his tenure, I met with newly appointed Secretary of Commerce Harry Coker, Jr. to talk about economic development, the Maryland State Arts Council, and Maryland Marketing Partnership (two Boards on which I serve). We also discussed the importance of nonprofits to the Maryland economy. I look forward to working with him and his team in these challenging times.

Briefing on Rising Energy Costs

The Senate Education, Energy, and the Environment Committee and House Economic Matters Committee held a 4+ hour joint briefing on the rising cost of energy in Maryland. We heard from the Public Service Commission and leaders from major energy companies about what’s driving the sharp increase in utility bills. One of the primary drivers of rising costs is legislation that was passed over a decade ago– the STRIDE (Strategic Infrastructure Development and Enhancement) plan— which allows companies to charge ratepayers for infrastructure upgrades before the work is even completed.

We raised concerns about affordability and transparency and will continue advocating for long-term solutions. Marylanders need a utility system that is reliable– without forcing working families to subsidize repair costs. This remains a complex challenge with real consequences for families and no easy answers. With smart policy and strong oversight, we can build an energy system that’s affordable, equitable, and resilient.
