Dear Friend:

Last night, a passenger jet and a Black Hawk helicopter collided midair and crashed into the Potomac River near National Airport. All 67 people aboard the two aircrafts died as a result of the collision, according to DC authorities. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating tragedy.

I had no doubt that a “Trump/Musk” Administration would promote policies counter to my values. And yet, I have been horrified by their hateful, ignorant, and irresponsible actions these first 10 days, the effects of which will be felt for generations. Putting an end to health research, public safety grants, or international engagement, or programs that diversify our workforce will not only be harmful to Americans but will diminish the United States as a role model and world leader. As Governor Moore so aptly said, “this is not what responsible government looks like– it’s chaos.”

Thankfully, many of these immoral actions are being challenged in the courts, and Monday’s federal aid freeze has already been rescinded by the Trump Administration. You can be proud that Maryland is at the forefront of fending off Trump’s dangerous agenda. But, I fear that we are facing a destructive and divisive four years with the potential for a Constitutional crisis.

Yesterday heralded the Year of the Snake. Just as a snake navigates its environment with grace and precision, we should approach our challenges with a clear sense of direction and purpose.

Did you know that more than a fourth of the General Assembly was selected rather than elected? Voters should be able to choose who represents them, and my Constitutional Amendment would mandate elections for many legislative vacancies. SB2 will be heard in the Senate Education, Energy, and Environment Committee next Wednesday, February 5, at 1:00 pm.

Since the 2024 Legislative Session ended, eleven of my fellow legislators have resigned for various reasons, with their seats filled by appointment. More may be coming! You can read coverage of this issue in The Daily Record and Bethesda Magazine. Last year’s bill passed the Senate 43-2, and I am hopeful that it will move in the House this year.

Yesterday, I presented my bipartisan bill (SB8) to create a Civic Excellence Program in public high schools. It would recognize students who achieve high marks in relevant courses and perform community service. Strong civics education has been linked to higher volunteerism rates, improved test scores, and increased voter turnout.

I often say that I have the best Delegates– and I know many of you share that pride. On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Del. Julie Palakovich Carr delivered the invocation to the House of Delegates in memory of the millions who were murdered. You can watch her prayer here.

It’s always a treat to see Maryland icons! This week, I got to spend a few minutes with the “Iron Man” himself, Cal Ripken, Jr.
