The Maryland General Assembly wrapped its session this week, but not before a rowdy last few minutes. Lawmakers are touting major accomplishments such as a balanced budget, a slew of anti-ICE bills, and the Utility RELIEF Act, which will temporarily cut a surcharge on electric bills. Lawmakers say it will shave about $150 annually from Marylanders’ utility costs

But some residents are questioning if the legislation goes far enough, particularly as Pepco seeks state approval to raise rates again. Sen. Kagan said she understands the concerns.

“It’s not what folks need or deserve, but that’s the reality right now. We are going to be working in the future to continue our efforts.”

Kagan said other provisions, such as tighter restrictions on data center energy use and new limits on utility companies’ ability to raise rates, will help reduce costs in the future. She also discussed election reforms, redistricting, and the Montgomery County Executive race.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser unveiled her proposed budget late last week. It includes significant cuts to childcare and paid leave programs. The budget now heads to the D.C. Council, with councilmembers looking to weigh in and approve it in June. At-Large Councilmember Doni Crawford joined the show to talk about the proposed cuts and what comes next. Plus, she gave us her thoughts on extending enhanced youth curfew laws.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser implemented a temporary enhanced juvenile curfew as a bridge until the D.C. Council’s Tuesday vote on permanently extending youth curfew rules.

“This is a short-term solution. That’s what I keep hearing, short-term solution. But what about a long-term permanent approach to this issue?,” she said.

Crawford added that while she anticipates a permanent enhanced youth curfew law to pass, it could include amendments to address concerns she and others have raised.

She also gave her thoughts on the D.C. Delegate race turning nasty.
