PRESS RELEASE: J6 Heroes to Testify Tomorrow

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

March 16, 2026

ANNAPOLIS, MD — One of Donald Trump’s first actions as President was to pardon hundreds of violent insurrectionists who invaded, desecrated, and attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Many brutally assaulted law enforcement officers using flagpoles, stun guns, crutches, bear spray, and stolen police shields. Five police officers died as a result of their physical or mental injuries.

Two officers who defended the Capitol that day– Sgt. Aquilino Gonell and former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn— will testify in Annapolis tomorrow in support of SB962. This legislation prohibits anyone convicted of a crime related to the insurrection from serving on any board, commission, task force, or workgroup. All 33 Democratic Senators have joined Senator Cheryl Kagan in co-sponsoring this bill.

Sen. Kagan declared, “Those who attacked the preeminent symbol of American democracy do not deserve the honor of a gubernatorial appointment.”

According to National Public Radio, 1,575 people were arrested in connection with the insurrection. Of those, 1,030 (65%) pleaded guilty, and roughly 250 (16%) were convicted by a judge or jury. President Trump pardoned all of them.

report by the Democratic staff of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee found that at least 33 pardoned rioters have faced new charges since January 6, 2021. Thirteen committed additional crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, and child sexual abuse, since being pardoned last year.

SB962 draws a clear line of accountability. It ensures that individuals who attacked American democracy cannot be placed in prestigious roles that shape public policy or advise our State leaders. The bill affirms the honor of public service and sends a clear message that efforts to overturn lawful authority will not be tolerated– or rewarded– in Maryland.
