And just like that…

April 11, 2024

Dear Friend:
We made it through Sine Die! The last day of our 90-day session went right up until midnight, and I am exhausted.

We passed a series of creative and common sense policy solutions to strengthen our State and make Maryland a place where all people can succeed.

Last-Minute Successes

As the clock neared midnight, the Senate passed some important bills– including the Maryland Protecting Opportunities and Regional Trade (PORT) Act, which allows the Governor to use the Rainy Day Fund in the aftermath of the Francis Scott Key Bridge tragedy. Gov. Moore has already signed this bill into law.

Another bill that passed in the final minutes was my emergency election recount bill. There have been a number of extraordinarily close elections in recent years– including Montgomery County Executive in both 2018 and 2022. We needed to update how recounts are handled so as to increase accuracy and efficiency.

Shaping Our Future

The first bill-signing ceremony was the day after adjournment. I was honored to stand with Gov. Moore and Senate President Ferguson as they signed the Protecting Election Officials Act into law. There is a shortage of election workers, and many staff and judges fear for their safety.

My bill to help nonprofits by streamlining the processes of working with government was also signed into law. The Maryland Efficient Grant Application (MEGA) Council will continue to enhance and improve the way our State supports the nonprofit sector!

Don’t Forget!

Tax Day is April 15, which is right around the corner. Comptroller Brooke Lierman has been working to make her office more responsive and more user-friendly. You can file your State income taxes online or by mail. For help, email taxhelp@marylandtaxes.gov or call 1-800-MDTAXES Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm.

The Early Bird…

No matter how you vote, it is important to make sure your voice is heard in the upcoming Maryland Primary Election!

Returning to the Community

Last night, I spoke at the Americana Centre Town Hall about the General Assembly’s accomplishments. In addition to presenting to the Gaithersburg and Rockville Mayors and City Councils in the coming weeks, I am looking forward to these events:

I hope to see you there!

Supporting Students in my District!

I am always inspired by the talented students who apply for my Senatorial Scholarships. The deadline for Fall Semester applications is April 30 at 5pm. We are seeking undergraduate and graduate students who are passionate about their education as well as our community. Financial need is also a consideration. Don’t wait until the last minute– members of my volunteer Senatorial Scholarship Selection Committee consider the thoughtfulness of the application essays. PS: On Sine Die, the Senate took a break and I met some of my staff and interns to watch the eclipse. We wore the best accessory yet: NASA-approved sunglasses!
